Official Rules

New York Fiddle Contest


1.       No electric or amplified instruments will be permitted in any category

2.      Contest is for 4 stringed fiddles only.  Contestants will be allowed to compete in one group only.

3.      Contestants must not use sheet music in any category

4.      There will be no accompaniment allowed.

5.    On-site entries will be accepted August 25 with paid admission to the fair.

6.      Scoring will be based on 100 points per each tune or song.  Scores will be based on execution, difficulty, dance ability/timing, tone and intonation.  Scores from elimination rounds will be added to final round scores for an overall cumulative score if necessary.

7.      In the event of a tie, a one-tune playoff will be held. Tunes played earlier are not eligible to be played again in this round.

8.      One false start per performance will be allowed (a bad start, wrong beginning of a tune and starting of a tune other than that intended).  Allowance will also be made for a string dropping out of tune, or sring breaking.

9. Contest organizers reserve the right to change or modify contest rules such as the schedule, order of categories.

10.  Time limit in divisions – Fiddlebuds (3min); Junior-Junior (4min); Junior (4min); Young Adult (6min); Adult (6min).

11. Medleys are not allowed, each selection must be a single tune.

12. Playing in such a manner as to not be able to recognize the melody easily will result in lost points.



Divisions by age


Fiddlebuds –---------- Age 8 and under------- 1 tune

Junior-Junior ----------Age 9 to 12------------ 2 tunes

Junior --------------Age 13 to 16 ----------------- 3 tunes

Young Adult -----------Age 17 to 2------------- 3 tunes

Adult -------------Age 22 and up ----------------- 3tunes
